Got the chance today to see the National Yiddish Book Library in Amherst, which is really an incredible institution. Perhaps the most interesting find was the epigraph from a Yiddish translation of the collected works of Shakespeare which read, roughly translated: Translated and improved. That, I think, is as concise and resonant articulation of the aspirations of Jewish history as any.
